The New Doctor -- Not What I Was Expecting...

Given the age and body type of the last two actors cast for the Doctor, and the flirtations the PTB have been writing for his mostly young female companions, I'm surprised Moffat and co. have chosen a mature, very experienced actor for the role. It gives me hope that the Doctor/companion dynamics will be shook up a bit; I feel like the PTB could go in almost any direction, with a companion of almost any age, gender, species or experience.

I like the Doctor, but I have thought the last two were mostly comic relief. My favorite since the reboot was definitely Christopher Eccleston. He had an edge to him. I liked River Song because she had the edge that Matt Smith lacked.

I like a mix of seriousness and whimsy/humor. All dark is not the Doctor to me. I'm looking forward to seeing what Capaldi does in the role. And River Song was awesome; if she hadn't been such an important established character, I would have LOVED for Alex Kingston to become the Doctor! Was really hoping for a female doctor this time, come on guys, mix it up a little. This is sci fi, we need to push some boundaries.

Had she not been River, I do think Kingston could have brought something really amazing to the role. Alas, I think it's really, really unlikely the Beeb is going to take that kind of risk. DW is such a commercial property for them, I'm surprised they even went so far as to cast a man over 40.

Exactly! how, um, groundbreaking of them! But really, it's okay, I always get excited to see what a new person can do in the role, it's so eclectic. This will be fun! (And Matt wasn't my favorite so I'm not as upset about his leaving as I was for Tennant.)

I am disappointed to see Smith go in part because I don't think they developed his persona as the Doctor as thoroughly as they should/could have. Eccleston's and Tennant's Doctors were each developed and distinct.

Agreed. It's a shame that the PTB didn't do more to make him a little more distinct. I'm really much more attached to the Ponds, and sadly, they're already gone.

Ditto. I've never really warmed to Smith, so I've nothing against mixing it up right now.

Agreed. From the little I know of Capaldi I think he might bring some of that.

That's what I'm hoping for. Smith brings the goofy side of the Doctor, but at best he's the Oncoming Strop, not the Oncoming Storm.
