Victory of the Daleks
So now Daleks are like iPods:
They come in all colors.
Really liked how Smith played this one--lots of terrible, important decisions, but less with the overwrought shouting than I expected the first Dalek story to have. He was visibly pained at the choice between the Earth and letting the Daleks go, but played it as inner turmoil rather than the weepy temper-tantrums that so characterized the last half of the 10 years. The scene at the start when he goes mad whacking the dalek with the iron tool was a bit OTT, but justifiable given the scope of the recent Dalek stories combined with the Time War stuff that he only recently relived. There was range, rather than one long, screechy high note.
The solution to the problem was a bit far-fetched (we just had those gravity bubbles and high-tech laser cannons in our back pocket, but weren't using them to bomb Dresden from space?), and Love Conquered All, which made me a little nauseous, but good acting made up for a lot of it.
Loved Winston Churchill. LOVE. Made me want to go take a photo with the statue outside the British embassy. Lots of giving and take with the Doctor on a less than over-awed level, that seems perfect for him. I kept waiting for this story to turn into an orgy of self-flagellation, and was pleasantly surprised; the whole thing was a very respectful treatment of the time period.
Though if I were Churchill, I'd have kicked the Doctor right in the nuts for his tut-tutting over alien tech. But at least they didn't leave that one hanging... OH EXCEPT FOR THE ROBOT WANDERING AROUND SCOTLAND LOOKING FOR HIS LOST LOVE. Thank goodness nothing can go wrong with that.
OMG I can't wait for next week!!!
