Fic: Reagent (The Hunger Games)
Mar. 8th, 2014 04:19 amTitle: Reagent
Characters: Brutus, Beetee, Lyme (Gen)
Rating: PG
Warnings: Extreme self-indulgence and ridiculousness
Summary: Engineers know better than most scientists the difference between theory and practice, the propensity for beautiful theories to be slain by ugly facts, and the complete inedibility of one's ideals.
A/N: I enjoy mentally playing around with the chemistry verse scenario: how can you realistically reconstruct a world as broken as post-war Panem? How do you ensure that scarce and highly localized resources are moved around so that people stay fed and warm while the economy and infrastructure are shattered, the population dangerously low, and if Gale's attitude is present in an significant portion of the population, the Rebels are deeply distrustful of even the civilian population of Two? Moonshining seemed like a good place to start. Just as I was about to email
lorataprose my musings, a devil appeared on my shoulder and whispered, 'hmm, why not just jot it down in fic format for her, for laughs.' I figured it would be a quick little scene of 'LOLLERTHREES, AREN'T THEY CUTE WHEN THEY'RE BEING ODD,' but almost immediately all kinds of feels started spilling out. Suddenly the characters were dealing with recurrent PTSD, coping with the fallout of acting on your principles, and revealing the misreading of each others' motives suggested in Where You're Needed. But somehow this story still contains snarky!Enobaria, drunken victors, and Brutus getting knee'd in the jewels. IT MIGHT BE A TAD UNEVEN. I'm not sure I'm capable of working it in to something better right now, so I'm going to leave it here, with appropriate caveats attached.
