Pyramids Press and Gold'n Lily Press are teaming up to present The Science of Deduction, an anthology of gen stories based on Sherlock, BBC’s modern day re-imagining of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic tales. Our central theme is the strong bonds of friendship and family between the Sherlock characters, especially John and Sherlock.

The Science of Deduction features 13 stories (230 pages) from some of the fandom's finest authors. The zine is professionally printed, perfect-bound (trade paperback), 6" x 9", with beautiful full-color cover art by [livejournal.com profile] myfieldnotes. Though we worked to get the look of the zine as close as possible to something you'd buy at a bookstore, it is a nonprofit, labor of love produced by fans, for fans. Like all Pyramids Press and Gold'n Lily Press zines, the stories are new (have not been previously published or appeared on the ‘net), gen (no slash or ship), and there are no deathfics. Ratings are G-R.

I've got some free time today (yay national holidays!) and I've given myself permission to fill it with reading. I've looked over my list of unread stories (or stories I read so long ago that I forgot what's in them), realized that several of them are in zines I own, and thought it might be a nice change of pace to put down the laptop (or the printout) and read from an actual book. Except, I've got a bit of a sickness about my zine collection: I used to buy and read and love and wear, and then one day I looked at the formerly beautiful cover of Gateways 2 and thought "Ack! I'm an abusive owner! Someone stop me before I kill again!" I've also become something of a stickler for the original printing (which tends to be more attractive and interesting than reprints), so over the past few years I've been searching out original print copies, in the best condition I can find, and trading away my worn or reprinted versions.

Which all leads to this morning, when I pulled out my copy of Kate Neurnberg's Buffy zine, Give Blood 2, which I found a perfect (apparently unread) copy of a few years ago. I fully intended to re-read it (the website is down but you can still find it, thank you wayback machine), and sat with it on my lap, trying to make myself open to the first story... Then realized I couldn't bear to risk creasing the cover (an absolutely lovely portrait of Giles by Kate), which would be an almost inevitable effect of the screw binding.

Perhaps the old laptop isn't so cold and impersonal after all. *headdesk*

My good friend Yum@ of Pyramids Press is announcing a new Supernatural print zine, The Brotherhood 8, to premier in three weeks at MediaWest*Con 29 and is available for mail order now at the website.

Like issues 2, 4, and 6, The Brotherhood 8 is an all-Supernatural gen zine with a strong emphasis on the brothers’ bond of family and friendship. Yum@ kept saying she was going to keep the page count reasonable this year, but so many awesome authors agreed to participate, it was impossible: The Brotherhood 8 is 440 pages!

Like previous editions, The Brotherhood 8 is professionally printed, perfect-bound, 6" x 9", with beautiful full-color, wrap-around cover art by Cathy. Though Pyramids Press works to get the look of zine as close as possible to something you'd buy at a bookstore, it is a nonprofit, labor of love produced by fans, for fans. Like all Pyramids Press zines, the stories are new (have not been previously published or appeared on the ‘net), gen (no slash), and there are no deathfics. Ratings are G-R.

As I mentioned in my desert isle fics list, I'm new to OldSchool!Who fanfiction, but what I've read I'm really enjoying. I love print zines and finishing up work on The Brotherhood 7 (which features a Ten, Donna, and Jack story by [livejournal.com profile] wendymr crafted from the purest awesome) has made me long for more print fic.

MediaWest, only a few weeks away, is my best shot at scoring Classic Who fanzines, but like a lot of things in DW fandom, it's difficult to know where to start. There's a huge number of zines that were in print, but many of those were letter/info zines or a mix of fiction and essays, and of course, fanworks vary widely in quality.

I'd really value recommendations. My peculiarities are:
* I would probably enjoy the commentary zines, but I'd prefer to start with zines that are at least half fic.
* I'm more about the characters than the awesome aliens/timey-wimey stuff.
* I lean toward the hurt/comfort side of the force.
* Gen, please.

Making recs brings fannish karma. Scientific fact.

My good friend Yum@ of Pyramids Press is announcing a new Supernatural print zine, The Brotherhood 2, to premier this week at MediaWest*Con 27.

The Brotherhood 2 is an all-Supernatural follow-up to last year's sell-out multimedia anthology, The Brotherhood 1. The zine is 420 pages, professionally printed, perfect-bound, 6" x 9", with beautiful full-color, wrap-around cover art by Cathy. Though Pyramids Press works to get the look of zine as close as possible to something you'd buy at a bookstore, it is a nonprofit, labor of love produced by fans, for fans. Like all Pyramids Press zines, the stories are new (not netfic), gen, and have a strong friendship/family focus. Ratings are G-R. As always, there are no deathfics.

Authors include new folks from Supernatural's LJ- and FF.net-based fandom as well as old Pyramids Press favorites, such as Kellifer, JennK528, Gaelicspirit, Happycabbage75, Kyriebess, Geminigrl11, Swanseajill, Blackwinged_bird, Tyranusfan, Kohadril, JJJunky, Brate, Jeanne Gold, Cathy, K. Hanna Korossy, Kaliope, and Yum@. Story excerpts are available here.

The Brotherhood 2 will be available for pick up at MediaWest*Con 27 (see con flyers for roomsale location). Unfortunately, there are no pre-orders for the con (it's just too complicated for Yum@ to do this year; thanks for your understanding). If you're not going to be at MediaWest, you can order a copy online to be shipped to you. The online order form is here. Cost is $32 US, $36 Canadian, $40 Europe/Australia. Orders will taken until June 15, and will ship June 25.

If you have any questions, you may write to Yum@ at sales [at] pyramidspress [dot] com. With MediaWest happening this week, please understand if her response time is a little slower than usual. If you have any trouble, let me know with a comment at my LJ or email me at penfoldx [at] gmail [dot] com, but bear in mind that I'll also be at MediaWest until next Tuesday.

Via [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants, the topic of fanfiction and copyright law is back on the metafandom radar.

A rather strongly worded rant claims:

YOU DO NOT MAKE MONEY OFF OF FANFIC.

EVER.

Do you realize the trouble you could bring down on the fanfic 'industry', such as it is, if you did? No, of course you don't, 'cause you're special and copyright laws apparently don't apply to you, or something.

If fanfiction is copyright infringement (that is, if it is a derivative work), it is copyright infringement regardless of whether money is made or not.

If fanfiction is infringement, one can attempt to make the defense of 'fair use', however, whether or not money is made is not determinative of whether a use is fair use. The test judges use to consider the defense of fair use has four elements:

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

Whether you make money is only one element of the four considered by a court in determining whether a use is fair use; it doesn't determine whether a use is fair or not. A use that makes no money but destroys the market for derivative works produced by the copyright holder is a lot more damaging (and likely to cause a successful lawsuit) than a use that makes some money but has no effect on the copyright holder's market for selling derivative works. A fair use defense is typically difficult to make (the courts apply test rather stringently), so if fanfiction does infringe on copyright, both zines and netfic are likely to fail the fair use test.

Of course, whether a copyright holder wants to go through a trial (with the expense and attendant negative publicity) is entirely another matter.

Selling fanfiction (ie, zines) is not some unique indicator that the work violates copyright, nor does offering your work for free provide a guaranteed 'out' (see this page for some basic information about common copyright myths, including the myth that if you don't make money, it's not infringement).

Also, "making money" does not necessarily "draw attention" to fanfiction. One might make the very strong argument that netfic is much more risky to the fanfiction world because it is so easily discoverable. All the copyright holder has to do is put the name of one of his/her characters into Google and s/he is bombarded with fanfiction. In most cases, zines are no more prominent than netfic, and there are many fewer zines than netfic websites at this point.

I think the poster might be conflating American copyright law with the common fannish custom that a zine maker would not build a profit margin into her publication, since doing so would be profiting off of the fans (her fellow community members, more friends than customers), something which used to be considered gauche.

This year, I've been very good about keeping track of all of my financial dealings with Microsoft Money. It's nifty: as I enter an expense, I assign a category, and then can see how much I spent on gas v. groceries. I've even got a separate category for zines.

I just ran my 6 month report.

o.O

I did not spend that much on zines. No way.

It just can't be that much.
