and you're aaaaaaaabsolutely right, this is the worst-case scenario for him, quintessential Two who's screwed over by the system (a system that he puts all his faith in), because not only does he lose a perfect victor, and one he would have connected with really really hard, but her parents won't even hate him which I think he would be ... craving a little bit, honestly, in a weird self-punishing penance way. If they'd hated him he could kind of deal, but nope, nothing but understanding and that makes it so so so so much worse :(
(and I mean, I wrote him losing his first tribute in the married AU and that was rough as hell and he had a wife there, so yeeeeeeah)
