2. Do they have any daily rituals?

Not before the war. Eibhlin is pretty neat, in general, but she doesn't have to do, or particularly enjoy doing, anything the same each time (which different than some of her classmates, many of whom had particularized rituals, either because they were aspy or superstitious about testing). She'll do things efficiently which might involve in many cases performing a task in a similar manner. The closest thing is probably the tea making?

After the war she has some difficulties with distractions/keeping a schedule, so Beetee revamps the tracking bracelet he invented for Wiress (who I imagine has had those issues to some degree most of her life, and it became almost unmanageable after her arena). Beetee/the bracelet put her back on a schedule that she pretty much keeps to (which probably still doesn't count as a ritual, but, well...). The closest thing I can think of is Sunday evenings, which eventually become a kind of 'extended family dinner' thing, with her new 'blended family'.

8. Favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging

Eibhlin's feelings about indulgence aren't as complicated as any of the other Threes; she had a privileged (for Three) life through most of her upbringing, with scientist parents, all the benefits that accrue to children who test Alpha, and then attending the science academy. She started having a bit of a tough time around 14-5 when she started to feel some distraction around one of 17s on the Blue Team; she knew she was 1) not old enough to hold his attention and 2) not supposed to be blanking out during collaboration sessions just because he'd rolled up his sleeves and was displaying tantalizing expanses of wrist and forearm... If she hadn't been reaped, that might have been an indulgence she became conflicted over.

Post-reaping, Eibhlin's favorite indulgences are of the scientific variety: expensive or hazardous chemicals, lines of research that are fascinating but not particularly remunerative, etc (I think all the Threes could spend a *lot* of their stipends, without thinking, on MOAR SCIENCE). She also likes ice cream and candy, so it's generally always in the apartment somewhere.

22. Given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH Eibhlin doesn't need to be given something to do. Her brain will feed her idea after idea. She might work on her latest formula, scratch out a design for a project, or if she's in a more whimsical mood, start composing something. If her brain is giving her too many ideas, she'll core-dump them in hasty notes, for later.

33. Concept of home and family?

Whew, a bit complicated. Eibhlin's parents died when she was six or seven. Until eleven she lived in the peacehome of the central sector, which was a decent place but didn't give her any kind of substitute family (and, er, her personality doesn't help much). The academy makes it a lot easier for her, being with people who have similar or complimentary personalities, assigned to a team that lives together and has structured activities together. She adapts pretty quickly to the idea of a family built on common interests and skills, rather than blood.

Her level of comfort with a 'found family' makes the transition to her post-arena life more smooth than it might otherwise have been (it also helps that Lumina and Beetee make sure she knows what to expect after she wins, so there's less disappointment when her former family are nowhere to be found). For Eibhlin, family is a matter of choice, and home is where those people are.

35. What activities do they enjoy, but consider to be a waste of time?

Technically, anything that doesn't further a project or a skill--or meet a basic need, Beetee interjects--is a waste of time. Eibhlin is quite good at making rationalizations about what constitutes furthering a project or developing a skill. For example, she would categorize all those walks in the woods as flora and fauna research, even after they start being more about spending time with Claudius. And the days by the lake are technically about reading, at first though they descend into naps and flower crowns quickly. Lake afternoons are probably the biggest technical waste of time. Eibhlin can't bring herself to label them that way, though--Claudius is too much like a basic need, at that point.

Charlie Chen is 120 lbs of sex on a stick ladies: thick black hair that falls into his face when he leans over, kept a rakish half-inch longer than most of the boys, the thick-tendoned wrists of a man who's lifted some heafty lab equipment, dark eyes you could swim in. And you should see him differentiate an equation.

Ah, I think I keep forgetting who I told what? It's relevant to Eibhlin, emotionally, but er, it's somewhat overshadowed by the later trauma.

Eib's parents were chemists for one the major heavy industry companies in Three. They, along with most of their scientist colleagues, the laborers, and their children in the on-site daycare, were killed in a massive explosion and the resulting fire (due to what everyone knows was the insistence of the Capitol in cutting corners on safety to reach certain production targets, but is only reported as a 'tragic accident'). The incident is still remembered, decades later, as the [Namehere] Industries disaster. Unfortunately, it's not the only incident--there's a constant push-pull between Three and the Capitol on safety v. speed.

5. Cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.)

Lumina is fairly neat, but not obsessive. Growing up in the Dark Days and their immediate aftermath, she was materially deprived and so treated every thing she owned with care. She learned to neatly and almost invisibly mend her clothes, kept books/computers away from anything that could damage them, and not having very much meant that nothing got left jumbled or under piles of detritus. Those habits were quite ingrained by the time she was reaped, and she kept them up after material comfort was no longer an issue.

There's a sense of time and purpose in all of her movements and actions, extending beyond her care for her belongings to her person. She's regular in her sleep habits, as much as she can be (she sleeps a lot less in her old age, and is often up before the sun and uses that time to meditate), in her eating (she's a vegetarian for ethical reasons, but also because it just makes life simple), and in her self-care (eg, lots of alpha Threes (*cough*Wiress*cough*) are easily distracted from routine self-care because their brains are going wildly fast and they need to get all their thoughts into pixels/paper; Lu has always been much better able to regulate herself, trusting that anything important is going to stay with her, so she has plenty of time to brush her teeth, comb her hair, etc.).

11. Intellectual pursuits?

Lumina was studying genetic engineering and biology before she was reaped. She kept up her research after her arena, especially work on difficult medical-related issues that she hoped would make up for being a part of the Games machine.

Beyond the professional, she's also very broad-minded--the opposite of the monomaniacal scientist stereotype. She particularly enjoys literature and philosophy. She has an extensive collection of books, particularly banned volumes of pre-Panem literature and thought (she tucks them in among the many 'legitimate' books she owns, and none of the Capitol goon squad thinks to look for them in plain sight).

Lu is the only one of my victors who's religious. She shares the Christian beliefs of her parents and many of the others in their pacifist anti-Capitol movement (though obviously she wasn't able to be the martyr they were hoping for). Those beliefs keep her out of the self-destructive side of victor culture. Much of her mental run time has been dedicated to trying to find a philosophically consistent approach to the problem of Capitol oppression (that doesn't end as disastrously as her parents' non-violent resistance movement).

From: [identity profile] penfold-x.livejournal.com
17. Preferred mode of dress and rituals surrounding dress

I think Lumina mostly keeps it simple, with a kind of 'personal uniform' that consists of tea-length skirts or dresses, structured but comfortable blouses, and sensible shoes (I'm guessing a lot of Threes do this sort of thing, to cut down on having to think too much about appearance--just find what works or makes her comfortable, and go with it). She's a big fan of soft, natural fibers. By her forties, she has to start wearing glasses, and settles all her whimsy there, with a pair of half-moon specs with shiny metallic rims that become her trademark (if she can be said to have one). No make-up (preferred) or at most a 'natural' look (in the Capitol).

Being an early victor, I don't think she had to deal with too much pressure to have a 'complicated' or sexy look--by the time things were getting elaborate, she was already past the age most of the Capitol would care, and her victory wasn't memorable, so she doesn't get dragged out for commentary or color (which of course suits her just fine).

22. Given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?

Hmmmmm... The answer to this one isn't jumping out to me the same way it does for Eib or Wiress. I suspect she'd do something fairly practical, like make a list of groceries or to-dos (presuming she's not allowed to just get up and go back to her lab!). Lumina has a very ordered mind, she doesn't tend to get consumed when she's science-ing. She's big with the meditation and a time to everything, etc.

24. Is there one subject of study that they excel at? Or do they even care about intellectual pursuits at all?

Lumina's principal area of study was genetic engineering and biotech. She especially wanted to focus on healing applications, but of course the Capitol wants ways to turn off people's free will and other scary sh!t. :/ She mostly got to work on her own projects in the years after her win, but things get more complicated after Snow comes to power, particularly when Eibhlin's popularity makes her more vulnerable to exploitation than Beetee (who's amazeballs, but fortunately less 'appealing').

27. What is their biggest regret?

Wow, OK, this is a huge one for Lumina, due to her ambivalence about being a victor. Her parents were leaders in a non-violent resistance movement that shared the goals of the other Dark Days rebels but condemned their methods. She was raised to believe in a pacifist philosophy (and really, is still pulled toward those ideas), but when it came time to make a 'statement' in the arena, she had an instinctual reaction separate from logical, reasoned beliefs. It took a lot of time out of the arena for her to reconcile herself to her own capacity for violence (and the job was never really quite done, tbh). For years, she continued to oppose any further rebellion; though this was mostly about practical applications (it seemed likely that the cost of war would be so high that they would risk annihilating themselves completely) she could never completely square the circle regarding the necessity of force and her fear of losing herself in violence (which she associates with irrationality and madness). Which is a long winded way of saying her biggest regret might be her own survival.

49. If this person were to get into a fist fight, what is their fighting style like?

Before or after she develops arthritis? ;) Seriously, fist fight was probably never her best option? Of all the arenas, I'm most handwavy about Lumina's, but I expect that traps played a large role. That's not to say she hasn't and wouldn't ever get into a direct physical fight--in fact, I suspect that's part of what finally, completely flipped her in her arena and that her first kill was a close combat frenzy thing. But for the most part, I think she'd prefer to pull back and use brains over brawn.

Hey Lor--I mean, Kawuli! No probs. Lots of people use tea length to mean below the knee but above the ankle, but most typically, it means around mid-calf. They're extremely comfortable to wear because you don't need to worry about accidentally flashing anyone (usually) but you also won't trip on anything.

Yes, I think Lumina would probably get along well with him. :)

In my head, Lumina and Mags have quite a bit in common, and apart from their biggest divide (the rebellion), exert a similar influence on the people around them (peacemaking, healing, uniting).
