The Tolkien Professor
Feb. 11th, 2011 10:29 pmThe Washington Post did a lovely long story this week on Professor Corey Olsen, a local medievalist and noted Tolkien scholar, who is pushing academic boundaries by using Web 2.0 tools like podcasts, Facebook and Skype to bring his scholarship to the masses:
For
eldritchhobbit, though she probably not only knows this guy, but is his friend on Profbook or whatnot. ;)
So in spring 2007, the Washington College professor took his scholarship public, with a podcast called "How to Read Tolkien and Why" and a Web site called The Tolkien Professor.
A million downloads later, Olsen is one of the most popular medievalists in America. His unusual path to success - a smartly branded Web site and a legion of iTunes listeners - marks an alternative to the publish-or-perish tradition of scholarship on the tenure track.
"Instead of spending all my time doing scholarly publishing, which we're told to do - which most people will never read - I basically decided to put myself out to the public," Olsen said.

Dec. 22nd, 2010 12:49 pmLaw and the Multiverse:Superheroes, Supervillians and the Law. Oh my goodness, I think I'm in love:
Who among us has not spent hours contemplating this issue? Or how governments react to extra-governmental law enforcement systems? Can Batman testify in court without revealing his identity? I have never heard Superman Mirandize anyone. Can injured bystanders sue their erstwhile rescuers? Should we be seeking to shut down the Guild of Calamitous Intent with a RICO suit? Professor X's telepathy and the hearsay problem may be my favorite thus far, though I think, in an actual telepathy-enabled world, we would almost certainly develop a new Fourth Amendment doctrine (or at least legislative protection) for individuals to be secure in their own thoughts from telepathic reading, at least without judicial warrant (at least, for evidential purposes).
Most of the time when property is damaged, the property owner has insurance that will pay to restore their property to approximately the state it was in before the loss occurred. But when Doomsday goes on a rampage of destruction across at least three states or the Joker blows up half of downtown Gotham, insurers aren’t actually going to want to pay for that, and there is reason to believe that under the terms of standard insurance contracts, they wouldn’t have to.

My good friend Yum@ of Pyramids Press is announcing a new Supernatural print zine, The Brotherhood 8, to premier in three weeks at MediaWest*Con 29 and is available for mail order now at the website.
Like issues 2, 4, and 6, The Brotherhood 8 is an all-Supernatural gen zine with a strong emphasis on the brothers’ bond of family and friendship. Yum@ kept saying she was going to keep the page count reasonable this year, but so many awesome authors agreed to participate, it was impossible: The Brotherhood 8 is 440 pages!
Like previous editions, The Brotherhood 8 is professionally printed, perfect-bound, 6" x 9", with beautiful full-color, wrap-around cover art by Cathy. Though Pyramids Press works to get the look of zine as close as possible to something you'd buy at a bookstore, it is a nonprofit, labor of love produced by fans, for fans. Like all Pyramids Press zines, the stories are new (have not been previously published or appeared on the ‘net), gen (no slash), and there are no deathfics. Ratings are G-R.

So I've just time-traveled back though the last week in the land of Who, and I've got one message for fandom:
Stop telling me how to react to the Eleven casting decision.
Seriously, if there's anything worse than people expressing snap, emotional judgments, it's fussy, busybody, know-it-all arbiters appropriate fandom reaction. Any regeneration is a big change. People are going to overreact (we're fans, we have investment in this). People are going to take every scrap of information and try to figure out what the next Doctor will be like, a difficult job considering how little we know and how long it's going to be until we see Eleven eps. Not everyone is going to be happy with what they read in the tealeaves, but just like the last 10 times, people will either be pleasantly surprised or turn off the set. Telling them to simmer down a waste of breath and condescending to boot.
And the repeated entreaties to "trust Moffat"? Yeah, I already have a god, thanks, and my church requires less blind faith than the Temple of the PTB. Stuff it, voice of reason.

DW Fandom: Dimensionally Trancendental
Dec. 7th, 2008 02:08 amOver the past couple of months, my interest in Classic Who has been revived in big way. You would think having a history with a show would make it easy to get back in the fandom, but the last time I was this captivated, John Major was prime minister. Commercial internet was in its infancy (I did not have access), and watching episodes involved finding a source that could get past the PAL-VHS divide (and, oh yah, the Atlantic) or being lucky enough to live in a region with good public television.1 Access to guidebooks or other tie-in materials was limited, especially if you didn't live near an active fan community. I familiarized myself with older episodes by reading the Terrence Dicks novelizations I bought from the bins underneath tables at the Star Trek conventions.2
In the meantime, Doctor Who has grown exponentially. In many ways, this is wonderful. For example, you can imagine the macro face I made when I stumbled onto Big Finish (I CAN HAZ TARDIS?!?). I am never going to be short of squee. But it is also a little overwhelming. There is so much to enjoy, I am not sure where to begin but I am quite sure that I am doing it all wrong.
It is also making me weirdly defensive. I have the urge to make an icon that says "I'm not here because David Tennant is pretty. I'm herebecause Sylvester McCoy gives me an inimitable feeling of childhood wonder and security for the plot."
For the love of all things holy, would someone just show me where the towels are kept?
This post has been brought to you by
penfold_x's inability to find an active Classic Who fic-finder community.
1 Defined as "plays episodes from a range of Doctor Who eras weekly," as opposed to "plays three episodes of Tom Baker over and over, until permanently preempted by The Joy of Painting."
2 Imma gonna to stop reminiscing here because this post is rapidly degenerating into "When I was your age we only had one con a year! And we had to walk there, in three feet of snow. Uphill! Both ways!" *waves old lady cane*

Shore Leave
Jul. 11th, 2008 07:53 amI'm off to Shore Leave this weekend. David Hewlett will be there, along with sister Kate. I suspect I will die of the cute. Jewell Stait is also appearing, as well as Keith DeCandido (the author of the first SPN tie-in novel, and the upcoming Bone Key). I plan to be at each of their talks, so if you have any questions about the upcoming season of Atlantis or the Supernatural tie-ins, drop a note in comments and I'll try to get an answer for you.
Given the number of Supernatural topics suggested on the programming grid, it looks like SPN is poised to again be the hot fandom of MediaWest*Con 28.

My good friend Yum@ of Pyramids Press is announcing two new Supernatural print zines, The Brotherhood 4 and The Brotherhood 6, to premier on May 22 at MediaWest*Con 28.
Like last year’s The Brotherhood 2, The Brotherhood 4 and The Brotherhood 6 are all-Supernatural gen zines with a strong emphasis on the brothers’ bond of family and friendship. This project started as one zine, but with well over 500 pages of excellent stories, Yum@ had no choice but to split it into two zines. The Brotherhood 4 is 283 pages; The Brotherhood 6 is 296 pages. Both zines are professionally printed, perfect-bound, 6" x 9", with beautiful full-color, wrap-around cover art by Cathy.

So, where’s The Brotherhood 5? Oh, that’s coming out for MediaWest too! Warriors for Legal Knowledge
May. 30th, 2007 09:02 pmI think there are a lot of folks spinning their wheels about this Warriors for Innocence/Mass Incest-Pedophelia Deletion Incident who are missing a couple of key points:
1) The First Amendment does not force a webhost/broadcaster to carry a particular type material or host discussions related to that material. LJ cannot be guilty of enforcing a "thought crimes" law or otherwise violating your constitutional rights because they're a private organization, not a branch of the government. They can decide not to carry discussion of or fiction related to pedophelia or incest. You can decide not to use/pay for the service. You can protest their decision (via letters or with your wallet) and hope their lawyers change their mind about their risk assessment or their executives reevaulate the public relations implications. Those are your options.
2) You don't have to be a law enforcement-associated organization or registered non-profit to complain about pedophilia- or incest-related material on LJ. Anyone can complain to a private company/broadcaster about the materials they carry/broadcast. Ask Don Imus.
